Internal spline, how to do it?
Hello everybody. I have a project here. The part is an adaptor to connect a bike engine's gearbox output shaft to a propshaft. The material of the adaptor have to be a strong alloy steel, like 4130.

I attach a couple of images of the adaptor. The part is fairly easy to machine, but the hard thing is the internal spline at the center which needs to slide over the splined output shaft of the engine.

What's the most economical way to do this internal spline? Wire-EDM perhaps? And how to design the exact shape of the spline? I need to replicate this internal spline exactly...

Like all engineers I like taking stuff to bits!, although i'm not sure my wife will be too impressed if I did as these guys have done and dismantle the Vacuum Cleaner to take part in a design challege to build a remote control ball and race it around an obstacle course! 

What we love about this story is that it shows what fun you can have with a few components and a little imagination!  It's like the drag racing equivalent of Robot Wars ! This type of activity should hopefully encourage a new generation of "Hackers".  When I say "Hackers" I refer to taking bits of hardware and integrating it with other bits, like in a Scrap Heap Challenge kind of way,  not as in the movie Wargames where Mathew Broderick almost started World War 3 when he inadvertently hacked into the US Missile Command thinking it was a games company!

I like the Lego modular system, especially Lego Technic.
I have a collection of Lego Technic Vehicles, i.e. Road Rally V (8225), Rough Terrain Vehicle (8270), Formula 1 Race Ca r(8808), etc. These small Lego vehicles could be upgraded to use (rare to find!)  Electric Motor Kit (8720) to drive the vehicle.

I want to challenge myself to incorporate Arduino, XBee into my R/C Lego car design.
I want to do something different!

I do not want to buy commercial available toy R/C (Radio-Controlled) car and modify it to used with XBee and Arduino. (I already did that successfully, Processing Controls R/C Car with XBee modules.
I want to do something similar to an NXT or RCX Mindstorm system with my R/C Lego car design (At the moment, I could not afford either NXT or RCX.)

I want to use parts that are available at hand.
So, I end up designed my very own R/C Lego Car by reused the parts from:
- Lego Steering System from 1996 Lego Car Kit (#8207 Dune Duster)
- Motor with worm gear from Electric Dragster from Middlesex University electric science series) ,
- micro servo from my other diy robot.
And built an Arduino compatible with simple motor driver IC (L293D) PCB, with wireless XBee breakout board compatible receptacle.
 And here is how I created it!

I needed a magnetic stirrer for my chemistry lab so I made a cheap one that looks almost like a professional one, but doesn't cost very much.
It is made from recycled parts from an old CD-ROM, a printer motor and things from an old CRT screen board (like resistor).

Researchers at the University of Warwick have created a cheap plastic composite that can be used even with low-end 3D printers, to produce custom-made electronic devices. The material, nicknamed "carbomorph," is both conductive and piezoresistive, meaning that both electronic tracks and touch-sensitive areas can now be easily embedded in 3D-printed objects without the need for complex procedures or expensive materials.

Carbomorph was made by adding carbon black – a conductive filler produced by the combustion of tar and vegetable oil – to a matrix of polycaprolactone (PCL), which is a biodegradable polyester with a low melting point of 60°C (140°F).
The result is a highly versatile composite that can be adapted to quickly prototype objects with embedded flex sensors or even capacitive, touch-sensitive buttons, such as computer game controllers or mugs that can tell how full they are.
Interfacing with the printed devices is also quite simple – the sensors can be monitored using existing open-source electronics and freely available programming libraries. In the near future, users will also be able to directly print up the wires and cables to interconnect those devices.

Mind-controlled permanently-attached prosthetic arm could revolutionize prosthetics

Researchers based at Chalmers University of Technology in Sweden have developed the world’s first thought-controlled, fully implantable robotic arm, which uses an amputee's own nerves and remaining muscles to afford a much more intuitive level of control than previously possible. Initial operations on patients are scheduled to take place during the Northern Hemisphere’s upcoming winter.
Prosthetic limbs which are controlled by electrical impulses in the muscles have been available to amputees since the 1960’s, but they tend to be limited in function and difficult to control. Additionally, many amputees find the standard method of using a tightly fitted socket to attach the prosthetic limb to the body so uncomfortable, that they choose to simply forgo using one altogether.
Keen to maximize the comfort and intuitiveness of their design, the Chalmers researchers looked to a process known as osseointegration. Originally developed in the 1960‘s, osseointegration involves joining living bone to the surface of an artificial implant, and has been used successfully for ear, eye, and nose prosthetics, in addition to larger limb prosthetics.
“Osseointegration is vital to our success,” explained Max Ortiz Catalan, industrial doctoral student at Chalmers University of Technology in Sweden. “We are now using the technology to gain permanent access to the electrodes that we will attach directly to nerves and muscles.”

Embraer Portugal ships first component for Legacy 500

The first component produced by the composite materials factory of Brazilian aeronautical company Empresa Brasileira de Aeronáutica (Embraer) in Portugal, a tail assembly for a Legacy 500 executive jet, has been shipped to the company’s headquarters in Sao Jose dos Campos, Brazil, the company said in a statement.
The tail assembly is a part of the aircraft made up of the fin (vertical stabiliser – to direct the plane left of right), the tailplane (horizontal stabiliser – to direct the plane up or down) and the rear part of the fuselage to which these are attached.

Aluger de motas eléctricas em Lisboa a partir de 2013

Lisboa passará a contar, a partir da primavera de 2013, com um sistema de aluguer de motas eléctricas. Denominado VeLx, este projecto pretende colocar à disposição dos lisboetas 70 motas eléctricas e 14 docas de carregamento.
Os consumidores que queiram alugar uma mota eléctrica terão um cartão para desbloqueá-la e contabilizar o tempo de uso. Quando não necessitar mais das motas eléctricas, o utilizador deverá deixar o veiculo a carregar numa doca de carregamento para que fique disponível para mais pessoas.
As motas eléctricas propostas para aluguer têm uma autonomia de 60 quilómetros e estão limitadas a 65km/h. Graças a uma plataforma desenvolvida, é possível localizar as motas por GPS, de modo a evitar roubos ou mesmo acidentes. Por exemplo, as motas estão dotadas com uma tecnologia que permite saber se alguém levantou a roda a mais de determinados centímetros e detectar um impacto violento.

A team at the Robotics Lab at the Illinois Institute of Technology (IIT) has come up with another take on the caged flying robots like the spherical air vehicle developed by Japan’s Ministry of Defense (JMD) and the more recent Kyosho Space Ball. However, instead of a spherical shape, the the outer protective cage of the HyTAQ (Hybrid Terrestrial and Aerial Quadrotor) is cylindrical and is attached to the quadrotor via a shaft connected by two rotating joints, thereby providing the HyTAQ with the ability to fly or roll over the ground.

Since the 1960s, NASA has equipped its Apollo missions and unmanned explorers with Radioisotope Thermal Generators (RTGs). These have worked very well, but they run on plutonium 238, which is currently in short supply. Therefore, the Los Alamos National Laboratory is developing a new small nuclear reactor for spacecraft that uses uranium instead of plutonium to power Stirling engines and generate electricity.

Approximately half my lifetime (20 years) ago I used to have literally drillions & drillions of ideas that I still feel aren’t a complete waste of time. One of these brilliant ideas was to be able to control a guitar wah pedal from my computer. At the time I had scant musical equipment to match my scant muscial abilities. I had scavenged what I could afford in my extremely limited means from pawnshops, flea markets, thrift stores, & the Penny Power. Among this discarded mess were an Atari 1040st computer which has built in MIDI, a Korg Poly800MkI synth, & a Boss DR550 drum machine. I had been successfully using the Atari to sequence the synth & drum machine, but wanted to also control effects for my guitar at the same time and in the same way. But this was the early 1990′s. I didn’t have the skill nor the funds to do anything of the sort.

Where the idea came.
The idea of creating RFID Emultor come from the idea to create an environment for developing and experimenting with different RFID applications. This article was created with the goal of engineers amateur enthusiasts and fans of electronics who like to experiment with different radio frequency devices and face their challenges. Later i realized it for the useful application of the schematic in our daily lives and how useful it can be developed schematic for making a backup of the existing RFID card, so you always have a backup of your access card - as assume that you have the spare keys to your home or car. If you loss your RIFD card, you will have backup using RIFD Emulator, you will not be able to lift without the barrier of your garage or sitting outside the office. After using this emulator for emergency needs when is possible and in convenient time you can tell people supporting system for access control that your card is lost and want new. And with RFID emulator you can make a backup of it and to use it in subsequent similar need. Most useful of all this is that RIFD Emulator will not confuse engagements planned for the day.

Oak Jewelry Box featuring Box Joint Construction

When I decided to make a jewelry box as a birthday gift for my daughter, my goal was to make it as distinctive as possible. So, since I always enjoy learning a new woodworking technique, I decided to teach myself how to create box joints.

The box joint, also called a finger joint, is an aesthetically pleasing form of joinery that turns a simple box into a beautiful piece of woodworking. While similar to the more elegant dovetail joint, box joints are more easily fabricated and actually provide a joint of superior strength. The technique used to create them, as presented in this instructable, is straightforward and relatively easy to master.

This instrument was build using  an Arduino Uno and some  hardware components ( rotary encoder, potentiometer and  simple iron bolds). The software running the actual audio and video is a Pure Data / GEM patch. Additionaly Echonest API was used to do the sample cutup. You can send any mp4 file to it and it returns a folder containing the sliced up .mp4 and .wav files.
The box was made using parametric Flexbox found on thingiverse..

Basic idea was to create an instrument which triggers certain parts of a sample. PD cuts up every sample into 8 sections and maps these on the 8 keys of the instrument. A random factor is build in to play the sample for- and backwards.The keys are plain iron bolds, we used capacitive sensing to trigger the sampleparts.

The rotary encoder on the right side of the instrument runs through the different files in the folder. The slider pitchshifts the sample.

Easy, Modular, Pine Bunkbeds
The Valiant
I've been building projects from Instructables for years but have never really had the time to post any of my own projects. I've found myself with a little extra time lately though and decided it was time to start giving back to the community. So, for my very first shot at an Instructable, allow me to present (drum roll please):

Bunk Beds! (and there was much rejoicing!)
(from wikipedia): A type of bed where one bed frame is stacked on top of another.

Like Minivans, the more children you have the better bunk beds start to look. And unless you are lucky enough to live in nice big house where everyone gets their own room, the ability to stack your children at night provides more floor space for things like desks, couches, and toys to trip over.

Unfortunately, bunk beds can be pretty pricey - putting them out of reach for most people. Worse than that, most of the production bunk bed frames on the market that I've seen are pretty flimsy - and I just couldn't justify spending $1,000 to have my kids spend 8 hours a night, 5 feet in the air, worried they were going to come crashing down every time they rolled over!

The good news is, you can pretty easily build a bunk bed that is rock solid, looks great, breaks down easily for moves, and is completely modular - and for only $125 - $200 in wood and supplies.

The speaker has a custom housing that suits a certain theme, for my GCSE I chose the theme of the 4 seasons, but the main style I chose was a snowflake and that's the style that I will be using to explain the design and build proccess.

For my son’s birthday I made him a DJ controller designed to resemble an old cabinet arcade machine. What follows is a brief overview of the process to make it, including code.

The Teensy was chosen as the brains because of the way it handles USB. Not only does it have native USB, rather than the FTDI USB-to-serial interface that turns making use of the port a series of work-arounds, but as you’ll see in the code the MIDI library makes writing the firmware a trivial pursuit.

Researchers transmit braille directly to the retina of blind test subject

Second Sight’s Argus II Retinal Prosthesis is definitely an interesting piece of technology, allowing a blind user to “see” objects, colors and movement in their environment. Ordinarily, this is done with the help of a video-camera-equipped pair of glasses worn by the user. In a recent experiment, however, researchers bypassed the camera, transmitting visual braille patterns directly to a blind test subject’s retina.
Here’s how the Argus II normally works. The prosthesis itself is implanted in a blind user’s eye, placing an array of 60 electrodes against the surface of the retina. The accompanying video glasses take in the view in front of the user, and convert the video signal into electrical pulses. These pulses are wirelessly transmitted to the implanted electrodes, which respond by selectively stimulating retinal nerve cells.
While the results aren’t the same as normal vision, they’re good enough to allow some users to identify individual printed letters.

Fingernail-sized radar chip could be used in future smartphones

Research based in Frankfurt, Germany, and funded by the European Union, has resulted in a new low-cost, fingernail-sized radar chip package that could be implemented in a variety of areas, including the automotive industry, robotics and smartphones.
The chip was developed under the “Silicon-based ultra-compact cost-efficient system design for mm-wave sensors” (or Success) consortium, and is believed to be the smallest complete silicon-based system-on-chip (SoC) device for radar able to operate at frequencies beyond 100 GHz.
“As far as I know, this is the smallest complete radar system in the world,” said Professor Christoph Scheytt, coordinator of the project on behalf of IHP Microelectronics in Frankfurt, Germany. “There are other chips working at frequencies beyond 100 GHz addressing radar sensing, but this is the highest level of integration that has ever been achieved in silicon.”
